TPCASTT Analyses

A Finger, Two Dots, and Me

Before I even begin the analysis, the title itself had me extremely confused. At first thought, I imagined this poem being about exploring and discovering new things. As it turns out, is poem is the explanation of the experience of love and life through the author's point of view. The author uses his own experiences and propels literature into a deep emotional level when he says, "I will love until there is no till." His explanation is very relatable and is very connectable. The attitude in this poem is just the way life is. The poem is easy to connect to because it starts off simple, and the author talks about how much he loves someone, and then moves to an analogy where the viewers learn the theme of life. At this point, the poem makes perfect sense and viewers can see it is an analogy regarding things can be found through faith and hope.

Monsters In My Stomach

This poem is an amazing piece of poetry that got me hooked before I even read it. My mind plundered the possibilities of what the poem could have been about and were a number of things the title could have meant. The poem is an analogy of monsters, otherwise known as imperfections, in parts of peoples' bodies to the parts of people's minds that cause them to to bad things, such as addict themselves to junk food, and retain manipulative personalities. This analogy can clearly be seen when Poetri says,"taste buds manipulate me, like people manipulate each other." This piece is so great in the fact that its lighthearted comedic beginning shifts into a more serious lesson at the end.

Good and Bad Slam Poems

Poem 1) The poem I really liked, What Guys Look For in Girls, by Savannah Brown, was an extremely revealing, yet disappointingly true aspect about the way men see women. This poem talked about how all the flaws men see in women, and how the author herself came to overcome adversity. She preached the ideals of inner beauty and love towards yourself. The poem was very descriptive, and powerful. An example that stood out to me was when she said women didn't need,"Diet pills to slim your kindness down." This poem to me is very important, and almost every guy should watch this and know that what women go brought in our society.

Poem 2) This Second poem titled, The Man, is a perfect example of someone using confusing words to illustrate shallow metaphors that make no sense. There are two poems in this video, but I'm only analyzing the first. This poem is very confusing, and isn't very relevant. The ideas are very poorly connected and confusing, and he uses this technique called bullshitting to make his words seem meaningful. Of course there is a purpose in the poem, but I doubt anyone can find it. He uses man so much you can never tell if he's talking about the oppressive big shot, or the common man. His metaphor at the begining of the poem singlehandedly throws of the poem stating,"I have a problem with the man. Not Thee man, but the man. You know who I'm talking about. But does he know who is talking about him, it's me." Overall, the poem is just not very great, but it's pretty funny the more you watch it.

Poetry Starters 3/10

The one thing I could never figure out was the universe
Or why it existed
Or why things worked the way they did
But I did know we were small
Smaller than anything I could ever comprehend
And evolved from exploding stars in distant galaxies older than our earth
Our light and mark could not be seen
By anything but us
But who are we

Another door was shut in my face
Another opportunity crumbled by my hands
The feeling was grainy
like sand that slipped through your grasp
that sand was gone
Yet the remnants of that grainy sand stood still in my hands
the foundation remained
The fear sustained
And loneliness attained

Satire in the Simpsons

1. This episode of the Simpsons basically is about how Bart gets upset with his teacher because of how old school she is, and he seeks to get revenge. In doing so, he sees how his father acts drunkenly, and then somehow acquires alcohol and gets her drunk. She's then fired, and Bart feels so bad that he tries to make amends with her and help get her back at the school.

2. The satire being presented in this episode is quite abundent. First of all, this episode is really taking a crack at technology and how it has taken over young peoples lives. Also, it is making fun of how young people have access to practically anything and are subject to the way their parents act.

3. The aspect of our society that is being mocked is not necessarily just the young generation, but PARENTS. It sort of is making fun of how parents are letting their kids grow up to fast and becoming little monsters. Also, it is critiscing how parents parent their kids, and why the kids are the way they are.

4. The targets are also the parents. The kids wouldn't act the way they do without influences from their parents. When Bart saw Homer smashed, he thought of the idea to get his teacher drunk that ultimately led to her being fired.

5. The intended outcome of this episode is really to show people how messed up our kids are and how parents need to do a better job of not letting their kids become little brats. it is trying to tell society how important it is to have good role models and how influencial adults are on their children. Lastly, this episode is trying to tell us that we shouldn't be letting our kids grow up so fast.

6. I totally agree with the message in this show. It's unfortunately pretty accurate of how my generations behaves and conducts themselves. Also, it is sad that we do have a lot of bad influences in our lives and that just adds to how bad we are already. I feel like it starts with the kids though in the end. It's up to someone how they act, no matter the influences in their lives. However, with that being said, it is also important that young people have good role models in their lives that can help them.

Ben Franklin Question

  • List three positive aspects of Native American culture, mentioned by Franklin, that you would like to see incorporated into our own culture. Explain. They had a positive and peaceful atomosphere, they had humility, and they were very respectful towards the Americans.
  • According to Franklin, what makes communication with the Native Americans difficult? Explain this in your own words. Our cultures were so different educationally and culturally plus they didn't speak very good English and they were very respectful while we were rude.
  • Who does this satire target? It targets the racist Americans.
  • What is ironic about this essay? Ben Franklin is being disrespectful to the natives and he is one of the founding fathers. Also we are calling natives savages, when in reality, we are the real savages.
  • Why would Franklin use the word “savages” in the title of his essay? That was the term for these people back in these times because we didn't like them, they threatened our way of life and we didn't know much about them.
  • Franklin uses a common satirical device in this essay when he reverses traditional roles. Such reversals occur when a country bumpkin turns out to be smarter than a city slicker, or when a child turns out to be smarter than a professor. In what ways do the so-called “savages” turn the tables on the “civilized” settlers? It is because we did not expect that from the people that supposedly didn't know anything.
  • How effective do you think this role reversal is? Explain. It was effective because the natives out smarted the English.
  • What relevance might this essay have to the world today? It still shows that maybe the higher class people are kind of rude and mean to the lower class people. Also, it shows that people with more "power" feel like they have the right to do whatever they want to people not as advanced or civilized.

    Shift poem

I hold the future  in my hands
    As well as the remote
    And the bright screen
All things that make us feel like were not alone, I hold
    My grandfather held the weight
    His hands held responsibility
    And hard work
As well as hands that raised my hands
His hands held much more meaning
Though we don't think so, he did
And our hands of today should get back to holding others and not just ourselves

    Source Annotation 2/19

    Issue- Oceans

Article- Robotic buoys to help detect heatwaves in Indian Ocean

Source- "Robotic buoys to help detect heatwaves in Indian Ocean." Sydney Morning Herald[Sydney, Australia] 30 Jan. 2014: 13. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 19 Feb. 2014.

Annotation- in this article, Australian and Indian scientists teamed up to identify the causes and impacts of so-called marine heatwaves like the devastating pulse of warm water that swept down the West Australian coastline in 2011. In doing so, scientists used floats equipped with extra sensors to gather a wider range of information on levels of oxygen, chlorophyll and dissolved organic matter. By doing this, "It will probably give us an idea of which year, in which place, we're likely to get strong amounts of fish production," Professor Trull said. In all, by detecting heat waves it will allow scientists to come up with a plan to migrate fish populations and increase them.

    Beauty Poem

Is there anything as beautiful as the drop of fresh rain seeping into a forest wildflower
    Perhaps
    Everyone has their wildflower
A wildflower could be the sunshine glimmering on your mut as they lay by the screen door
It could be the crusted over mud on your spokes after a long day on Moab trails
It could even be your salty sandy musted swim trunks after a long day on the Florida coast
Or it might just be something as majestic as freshly fallen snow on the peak you inhale as you accent to the top

    Pathos Analysis

This commercial  portrays taking prescription drugs for anti depression. The speaker tries to get you to buy there product. The speaker asks if you have any problems, and if you say yes, then you probably need this drug. The add gives a list of common problems that are pretty prevalent in people's lives so that makes the drug more appealing to the audience. The speaker is trying to persuade you to buy this product so he/she will make money.

In this speech, Obama wants the people to feel sorry, so he picks out a lady who makes minimum wage and tells her story to the people of America. At the end of his story,  he makes it seem as if it's the wealthy's fault that the lady has a hard life because they don't pay enough taxes. Obama makes people feel sorry in order for himself to gain credibility, make a point and call out people who don't pay taxes.

    On Dumpster Diving Questions

    1. What is the difference between a "scavenger" and a "scrounger"?

-Scavenging is like a snail gathering on the wall of a fish tank, and
scrounging is lifting your life off others.

     2. What is the main reason Eighner doesn't scavenge individual garbage
     cans?
-He finds individual garbage cans very personal to people, in that they have
bank statements, drug bottles and things that give personal information.

     3. How is the organization of this essay similar to the main idea of
paragraph 70 ("By far the best way...)?
-The beginning of the essay is filled with "rubbish" while the end ends with very good information.

     4. As a dumpster diver, how is Eighner similar to the "very wealthy"?
-Their attitudes are the same in that, "there is plenty more where that came from."

     5. What is ironic about this essay?
-the author thinks of himself as better than the millions who sit at home watching tv at night, when most people would think of dumpster divers as the lowlife.

    Appeal Identification

Passage 1- The first speech by Brack Obama was ethos one in my opinion. First of all, the speaker had a strong fan base before hand and was a cretible politician. The speech was well though out, structured well, and had a purpose from the very beginning. Due to the fact that he's running for president, the speech is obviously going to be ethical to some degree and address that part of things. He brings in the aspect of guaranteeing protection saying that he, "will build new partnerships to defeat the threats of the 21st century: terrorism and nuclear proliferation; poverty and genocide; climate change and disease." All of those very topics bring ethics and moral into the speech.

Passage 2- This speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. is very pathos to me. First of all, this speech is very very emotional. The speaker does a great job of bringing emotional struggles and triumph his supporters have been through. He paints a very clear picture about his beliefs. His way of embracing and pitying his fellow activists struggle can be supported when he says that, "And some of you have come from areas where your quest -- quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality." This just shows the reader that he is getting in tune with his followers, speaking passionately, and getting in tune si the emotions of his followers.

Passage 3- This last passage is a very good example of a logos speech. To begin with, it is very logical. That's probably obvious to everyone. This speech is packed with information, stats and facts. This type of speech is persuading through facts like, "since stabilizing in mid-2009, real household spending in the United States has grown in the range of 1 to 2 percent at annual rates, a relatively modest pace." Because this speech is filled simply filled with facts and information, that alone makes it logos.

    Abzug

Edward Abbey, in his novel "The Monkey Wrench Gang", paints a vivid description of the character Bonnie Abaug as a granola when he emphasizes the recycled home made lanterns in the description of her geodetic dome living space located in the American Soithwest.

    Fiction warmup 2

    Apple, rain, 1943

In the midst of war, my soggy apple seems to be of the same worth as your pot roast feast. Its now the summer of 1943, I can't believe I'm almost  26 years old. I know I just left you with the kids and all and believe me, I feel bad about it everyday. Im already weary from the war, and it just seemed to be getting longer. The fighting is getting harder, the days are growing longer, and it's getting harder to see friends gone. That Apple was sent from some men back at base. Food is a rare commodity, especially American treats. I guess today was the perfect day to have something American. I almost forgot what I was fighting for, for a little while. It's raining here, and I can't help but think Georgia is having some good weather right now. It's scary here darling. I miss you, and the kids. I never thought I'd be drafted and have to go to war, but I'm here, and I'm alive. Just let the kids know I miss them so much. I hope Chris is doing good in school, you keep on him about those grades. And as for Jennifer, I know she'll be on right, she's got her head on straight. I hope the money is getting to you in time, I know things are probably tight. I promise you though that when I get home, were gonna buy that lake house you always wanted with that rope swing and such. I only have 5 months left, and I defiantly think they're starting to grow tired of this fighting. Were using these new things called machine guns. They're probably the reason I'm still alive in all likelihood. I just wanted to check up with you, and let you know how I'm doing and how I'm feeling, I'm gonna keep fighting and make it home soon to you, I love you Charline,

    Sincerely, James

    Advertisement Analysis

The author of this advertisement is obviously coming from the Montana Meth Project. This advertisement is probably being advertised because Montana has some sort of meth problem and they are trying to get their point across to young individuals. This ad is most likely targeting younger teenage women and parents. The tactics being used here is the scare factor. This ad is scary and very profound , and that is something that sticks with younger audiences and especially parents. The author does a very good job at targeting everyone and overall this ad is very powerful.

This author is probably from some nature/wildlife conservationist. This ad is being advertised because there is probably a lot of overfishing happening in the world right now. The author probably knew that everyone cares about pandas, and care that their going extinct. He also knows that probably nobody cares about tuna, even thought their being overfished and probably on the verge of extinction. This ad is really targeting everyone. It's targeting people who care about the world and about the animals inside it. The tactic being used here is guilt. It's very guilt related and speaks to people who take fish for granted. Overall, this ad make me personally feel guilty and I think it does a good job of exposing an animal that doesn't get as much attention as others.

    Poetry Starters One

    Haiku

    Drugs were his first lord
    Satan finally got bored
    Mother cut the cord

    Sometimes things shouldn't happen twice
Lightning isn't supposed to strike the same place twice
    People shouldn't ever leave twice
    Once is enough
Just like when a father you've known strikes his wife
Even after all the morals he's brought you up to uphold
There's always a time and a place for second chances
That isn't one of them though
You should have more than one chance to love
Never more than one to hate
    Go around the world twice
    Talk to everyone once
    Take second chances
    Not second guesses
    Make the right ones first
    Make the right ones last.

    Citation Quiz

Question: How does social media affect our lives?

Social media affects our lives in a lot of different ways. For some, it is thought to be a tool that nuances our lives and the understanding of others lives. On that same note, others think that social media is the reason we are,"relying on digital media to work, play and socialize" (Welles, 1). I personally believe that this statement is very true. It seems that social media is becoming less and less about our friends and trying to catch up on what they're doing, and more about us and how were going to one up our friends. Also, social media has turned into marketing's best friend. I know that every time i go on social media cites, I find myself getting distracted with adds and losing my purpose for going on there in the first place. In fact, "A new BIA/Kelsey report says social media ad revenue will reach $11 billion by 2017" ( Rupert, 1). Social media certainly is a great way to stay connected to those close to you, but it is also a great way to find yourself sad if you let it. Social media is apart of our world and it has the power to positively influence generations or tear them apart.

    Fiction Warm Up 1

She was looking through the freshly picked honey crisp apples when she caught my eye.  My palms grew sweaty and since I was in the banana section I was already feeling a little self conscious;)...:/ never the less, I followed her diligently, watching close and examining her every move. I could almost taste her hair on my tounge. I bet it would be a sweet honey if anything. The store was dim, and the lights didn't work very well. I felt aweful about following her around so much but I just couldn't help it. As she headed to the check out, I pulled out my worn leather wallet and took of on a sprint to the same line. As I got there I sacked up and offered to pay. Surprisingly, she was ok with it. I offered to help put her groceries in her car like a gentlemen would, and again she said yes. I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my body. I could almost relate to my moms old college heroine stories. That's besides the point; what really mattered was making making this woman mine. As she was about to get in car, she sneezed and I offered her a tissue. As she was a bout to grab it I said," excuse me can you tell me if this smells like chloroform." She was out. I felt so proud. Then we made love in her Rav 4. I was going to be a dad. This whole thing worked out so well. Im so happy she choose me.

    Featured Viewpoint Annotation

    Issue- Birth Control

Article-  Teens Should Have Access to Emergency Contraception Without Parental Consent

Kelly, Maura. "Teens Should Have Access to Emergency Contraception Without Parental Consent."
Birth Control. Ed. Margaret Haerens and Lynn M. Zott. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2012. Opposing
Viewpoints. Rpt. from "Plan B Should Be an Option for All." Guardian 13 Mar. 2009. Opposing
Viewpoints in Context. Web. 16 Jan. 2014.

Annotation- I strongly agree with what the author in this article is talking about. The controversy the author Lauren Maura applauds is the, "recent legal decision to allow seventeen-year-old girls to obtain emergency contraception without a prescription from a doctor(Maura)." The point she defends very well is that conservatives under the Bush administration held off approving emergency contraceptives because their views were purely based on,"...the mistaken belief that emergency contraception is tantamount to abortion—which it is not(Maura)." I personally believe that girls should be entitled to protecting themselves whenever they really need it. You should have to wait to become an "adult" before you can make those important decisions that will affect your life forever. In the end, women should have every right to purchase emergency contraceptives whenever they need too in order to help better their life and not bring a person into the world they can't take care of.

    If I were President

If I was the president, there would be a few huge issues I would try to fix. First of all, I would try to get Americans more jobs and more money circulating in our country and try to get us a little less out of debt. Secondly, I would try to unify people in our country by fully legalizing gay marriage and giving them the same rights as everyone else. I would try to help Mexico and help stabilize their government  out so the immigration into our country isn't so bad. Lastly, I would probably just try get rid of all the stupid useless unfair laws, and make hints fair for everyone. So people that work and get jobs, keep their money instead of giving it to those who don't even work.

    Story Telling Refelection

For me, it felt alright to hear someone else tell my story. It was kind of cool to know someone payed attention to what I was saying and tried to get it right even though she didn't know me very well. I liked that she payed attention and tried to get the details right as best she could.
Stories help build communities in a lot of different ways. First of all, they strengthen bonds and better relationships within a community. They also help build friendships as well as communicate important thoughts and ideas to those that are important to them. They can can either strengthen people, or weaken them.
For me, telling another persons story was hard for me. I tried hard to get the details down because when people miss important parts of the story or tell it wrong, it embarrasses the person. Also it's kind of nerve racking because you don't want to embarass the other person or make them mad at you.

    Current Event

The name of my story I chose to do is "Cairo artists take creative energy to the streets" from CNN. In 2011, after the revolution in Cairo, an explosion of art then followed. The people were no longer confined to exhibit their works in galleries, and more and more artists were turning humble streets into open air studios and outdoor museums. The artists began to show their beliefs and feelings towards politics and took art to the heart of the city. The revolution just created an abundant amount of art and was a representation of people feelings. This doesn't really connect that much to my life because I'm not currently experiencing a revolution and don't do art to express my feelings. However, it does relate to me in the fact that I've seen a lot of art that's had political meaning behind it and known the artist very well and shared the same beliefs.

    Nitty Gritty Rough Draft Grade

After reading the rubric, I believe that my Nitty Gritty story deserves an 8 at this point. I believe this because first of all, my draft has no errors and all the words are spelled correctly. I feel like my ideas aren't fully connected which is an easy thing to clear up but as of now it isn't the very best I could do. My story meets the requirements of the prompt, and as for word choice, I feel like it is good, but I could defiantly spruce up the grammar in it. Everything is organized and my ideas are put together in order so that the story makes sense. Overall, as of right now I think I'd scrape and 8 but the story has a lot of room for improvement before I turn in the final draft.

    My Communities

Communities are the foundations for things that are bigger than yourself. I personally belong to a lot of communities that are greater than me. First of all, I belong to the basketball community. This community is not about stats or about yourself, the basketball community is about us, the mustangs. Secondly, I belong to the education community. I take pride in trying to be good in school and I love challenging myself to get good grades. This community is full of people who really want to succeed at whatever they are doing and work hard. Lastly, I belong to the StuCo community. I love this community just because it's full of awesome people trying to make our school a fun, awesome place.
